Savile, Henry, Sir, 1549-1622
English mathematician and classical scholar, who studied, taught, and held offices at Oxford University. Following a four-year-long tour of Europe, he was recommended as tutor in Greek to Queen Elizabeth I, thereafter gaining the esteem of the Elizabethan court. He was made warden of Merton College in 1585, and then provost of Eton College in 1585. He is known for his translations of secular and religious works, including those of Euclid and Tacitus, and for editing the works of John Chrysostom. He would also be knighted by the new King James VI/I and enlisted as one of the translators of his authorized Bible in 1604. He is also credited for developing the mathematics and scientific curriculum at Oxford and for being an early contributor to the Bodleian Library.
