Thomas, de Cantimpré, approximately 1200-approximately 1270

Flemish Augustinian canon and later Dominican friar theologian, preacher, and hagiographer. In 1217, he entered the canons regular of St. Augustine at the abbey at Cantimpré, was ordained a priest while there. He then entered the Dominican Order in 1232, studying theology in Cologne and in Paris, and thereafter teaching philosophy and theology in Louvain. He devoted the latter part of his life to preaching throughout Germany, France, and Belgium. He is best known for his encyclopedic De natura rerum and his allegorical Bonum universale de apibus, which delves into the spiritual and moral aspects of religious life.
