Makwannen Walda Mikāʼēl, rās, 1852-1906

A leading figure under Menilek II, he twice served as a regional governor and successfully undertook military operations in many regions of Ethiopia, including at the Battle of Adwā, where he was wounded. After Menilek's rise to the imperial throne, Makwannen also became the emperor's chief diplomat to European nations, resulting in several major international treaties and his appointment to the French Légion d'honneur. Already granted the lofty title rās in April 1890, he was designated the emperor's chosen successor in 1898, a plan ultimately undermined by his death in early 1906. His second son, the future Emperor Ḫāyla Śellāsē, would later attain the position.
