Witzel, Georg, 1501-1573
German theologian who studied in Erfurt and Wittenberg. He converted to Lutheranism in 1524, working for a time as a clerk and then as a Lutheran pastor in Wenigen-Lupitz and in Niemegk, before he returned to Catholicism. By 1533, he was a Catholic preacher in Eisleben. He spent some time at the courts of Dresden and Brandenburg, then was a councillor and participated in many imperial diets. After 1553, he worked as a theologian and the university in Mainz, where he earned a doctor of theology. He wrote approximately 150 theological writings, primarily pastoral theology, including sermons and writings on the Catechism and Church Fathers.
