Coronelli, Vincenzo Maria, 1650-1718
Italian Franciscan friar, cartographer, geographer, and theologian. He studied carpentry in Ravenna before returning to his native Venice. He entered the Franciscan order in the mid-1660s, studied theology in Rome, and soon after was appointed provincial secretary for the mainland of Venice. He left this office to focus on geography, employed in Parma and in Paris to build globes. In 1684, he founded the Accademia cosmografica degli Argonauti. The following year he was made cosmographer of the Republic of Venice, publishing the Memorie istoriografiche del Regno di Morea e Negroponte (1685), Il Mediterraneo descritto (1688), and L'Atlante veneto (1690). He was widely travelled and had formidable patrons throughout Europe, all the while active in administrative and diplomatic capacities for the Franciscan order. His most imposing work was the seven-volume encyclopedic Biblioteca universale sacro-profana, antico-moderna (1701-1709). He died in Venice on December 9, 1718.
