Thomas, Antoine, 1644-1709
French Jesuit priest, philosopher, missionary, astronomer, and mathematician, who taught at the Université de Douai for two years, before becoming a missionary in China. He was the mathematical and astronomical expert in China and was an advisor on various matters to the Kangxi Emperor, from whom he was able to obtain an 'edict of tolerance' to Christian missionaries. He died in Beijing in 1709.
