Cesti, Antonio, 1623-1669
Baptised as Pietro Cesti on August 5,1623, he later adopted the name Antonio Cesti and is known as a Baroque composer, tenor singer, and organist. In 1637 he joined the Franciscan order, serving as organist and music master, and under the patronage of the Medicis he began composing and singing secular operas--conflicting roles which led to a reprimand in 1650. In 1652 he joined the court of Ferdinand Charles, Archduke of Austria, at Innsbruck as chapelmaster. He was released from his vows in Rome in 1659 and sang and composed at the Sistine Chapel in 1660. From 1665 to 1667 he was chapelmaster in Vienna under Holy Roman Emperor Leopold I. His most recognized operas were La Dori (Innsbruck, 1657), the lavish Il pomo d'oro (Vienna, 1668), and the popular Orontea (1656).
