Yovhannēs Vardapet, Orotnetsʻi, 1315-1386
Yovhannēs Orotnetsʻi was a renowned theologian, philosopher, and vardapet (Church father, doctor of the church). He was born in Orotn region in Vaghadin village in 1315. He was the son of prince Iwanē Orbēlean. He was ordained as a priest in 1337 and obtained his rank as a vardapet at the Gladzor monastery, where he was a student of Esayi Nchʻetsʻi and Tiratur vardapet. He knew Latin and engaged with the Ameno-Latin challenge in the 14th century. He was a prolific teacher at Gladzor and Tatʻev monasteries, where he raised dedicated vardapets serving in different monasteries in Greater Armenia. His students included Grigor Tatʻevatsʻi, Grigor Xlatʻecʻi, Maghakʻia Ghrimetsʻi, to name a few. Orotnetsʻi died in Berdik, Nakhchivan, during the Timurid invasions in 1386 in Greater Armenia.
