Massillon, Jean-Baptiste, 1663-1742
French prelate and preacher. He joined Société de l'Oratoire de Jésus et de Marie Immaculée (French Oratory) at eighteen, and taught at seminaries of the congregation in Pézenas, Montbrison, and Vienne. He was praised, even by philosophes, for his orations at the court of Versailles as chaplain to king Louis XIV. He was appointed bishop of Clermont in 1717, and soon after elected to the Académie française in 1719.
