Azzopardi, John, 1937-2021

Monsignor John Azzopardi (1937-2021) was a Maltese priest, historian, curator, and archivist. He was ordained a priest in 1962, and served as a parish priest and canon and chancellor of St. Paul's Collegiate Church in Rabat. He served as the curator of the Cathedral Museum, Mdina (1967-2001), and as archivist of the Cathedral Archives, Mdina (2006-2021). He founded the Wignacourt Museum in Rabat in 1981 and served as a chaplain grand cross of the Order of Saint John of Jersusalem, of Rhodes, and of Malta. From 1973 to 1989, Azzopardi led the Malta Manuscript Microfilm Project in partnership with the Hill Museum & Manuscript Library. Azzopardi wrote several works on the history of music, archives, and history of Malta, and was a noted scholar of the Apostle Paul. He was awarded the Medalja ghall-Qadi tar-Repubblika.
