Estienne, Robert, 1503?-1559
French printer and bookseller, who was proprietor of a firm established in 1502 by his father Henri Estienne. Estienne published Latin, Hebrew, and Greek classics, translations of the Bible, and lexicographical works. He also edited and provided commentaries on several of the firm's religious publications, some of which faced criticism from the Université de Paris. A convert to Catholicism, upon the death of patron King Francis I in 1547, Estienne fled to Geneva, where he established a printing firm. He died in 1559.
