Ḫeruy Walda Śellāsē, Blāttēn gētā, 1878-1938
Blāttēn gētā Ḫeruy Walda Śellāsē served as Foreign Minister of Ethiopia from 1931-1936 and acting mayor of Addis Ababa from 1919-1921. A polyglott and frequent traveller, he was also among the leading intellectuals of early 20th century Ethiopia, and the printing of his more than twenty books significantly advanced the use of the medium in the country. After following Emperor Ḫāyla Śellāsē into exile during the Italian invasion, he taught Ethiopian languages at the School of Oriental and African Studies prior to his 1938 death in Bath.
