Costa, Jorge da, Cardinal, 1406-1508

Jorge da Costa was a Portuguese prelate and cardinal. He served as Archbishop of Lisbon (1464-1500) and of Braga (1486-1501) as well as confessor to King Afonso of Portugal (1432-1481), who deployed da Costa as ambassador to the Kingdom of Castile. He was also a government minister. He was made a cardinal in 1476, and amassed much wealth, becoming a patron of the arts. A poor relationship with the Afonso's son and heir John II (1455-1495) resulted in da Costa's exile in Rome.
