Sydney, Thomas Townshend, Viscount, 1733-1800

British politician and government servant, who was a member of parliament, held positions in the royal household and as paymaster-general of the forces, and was made a royal privy councillor in 1767. He was entrenched in the politics of his day, both as a cabinet minister and in opposition well into the 1790s. He was created viscount in 1789.
