Louis XVIII, King of France, 1755-1824
French king, the fourth son of the dauphin Louis, the son of Louis XV. After the deaths of his elder brother Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette in the French Revolution, he was regent for his nephew, the dauphin Louis XVII, who died in prison June 1795; Louis XVIII proclaimed himself king. During the French Revolution and Napoleonic era, Louis XVIII lived in exile in Prussia, the United Kingdom, and Russia.
