Bembo, Pietro, 1470-1547
Italian scholar, poet, literary theorist, and cardinal, who championed the use of Tuscan dialect for poetry and prose. He was well-connected to the Borgia and then the Medici families, perhaps garnering him preferment of Pope Leo X, for whom he served as Latin secretary, and of Pope Paul II, who made him a cardinal. Prior to this, he became a member of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem and held the offices of historian of the Republic of Venice and librarian of the basilica of San Marco di Venezia. Cardinal Protector of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem appointed August 23, 1542.
