Hausa States
This former group of states included Zaria, Kano, and Katsina, which were prosperous city-states by the 14th century, although they never united to form one Hausa state. Conquered by Usuman dan Fodio in the 1800s, and incorporated into the Fulani empire. In the beginning of the 20th century, the British took over and formed the northern provinces of Nigeria. (Getty)
