Università di Napoli L'Orientale

University in Naples that traces its origins to the Collegio dei Cinesi, founded by Matteo Ripa in 1724; officially recognized by Clement XII in 1732 with the goal of training missionary priests to spread Catholicism to China. Over the years, the language specializations of the school expanded, and the name of the school changed as its purpose and social environs changed: from the Collegio dei Cinesi (1732-1868) to the Real collegio asiatico (1868-1888), Regio istituto orientale (1888-1925), Regio istituto superiore orientale (1925-1937), Istituto universitario orientale (1937-2002), Università degli Studi di Napoli "L'Orientale" (2002-2021), and Università di Napoli L'Orientale (2021- ).
