Francolin, Hans von, 1520-1580
Hans von Francolin came from Burgundy and was the first nobleman to become a herald in the Holy Roman Empire, appointed in 1545 under the reign of Charles V. Johann settled in Vienna in 1560, joining the court there and becoming a Hungarian royal herald for Ferdinand I. In 1562 he received property and land from the emperor. In 1560 he was the author of the tournament book titled Turnierbuches, wahrhaftiger ritterlicher Thaten, which describes the 1560 Viennese celebrations of Prince Albert V of Bavaria and his sister. The printed work contains several woodcuts and copper plates made by Donath Huebschmann, a Viennese engraver. A Latin edition was published a year later under the title Rerum praeclare gestarum. His other writings include various proclamations and a book of heraldry.
