Salicetus, Nicolaus, -approximately 1493
Nicolaus was born sometime between 1425 and 1450 in Bern, Switzerland. He studied first in Bern and then in Paris, earning a doctorate in medicine in 1461. Returning to Bern in 1470, he worked as a city doctor. In 1477, he lived and preached at a Cistercian abbey in either Frienisberg or Sankt Urban (Switzerland). The abbot of Citeaux Jean de Cirey (1434-1503) appointed Nicolaus in 1482 to become the abbot of Baumgarten, the Cistercian abbey in Alsace, where he wrote the popular prayer book Antidotarius animae and where he died in 1493.
