Pinheiro, Gonçalo, Bishop of Viseu, -1567
Portuguese prelate, who was appointed bishop of Safim (1537), bishop of Tangier (1542), and bishop of Viseu (1552-1567). Prior to his episcopal appointments, he studied at the universities of Lisbon and Salamanca. He then received several benefices and held legal and diplomatic offices, serving as ambassador of France in the mid-1540s. He was proficient in Greek and Hebrew, and was an enthusiast of astronomy and geometry.
