Sulaymān I, Shah of Iran, 1648-1694
The 8th ruler of the Safavid dynasty, he ruled from 1666 to 1694. He was born with the given name Sām Mirzā. When his father, Shah ʻAbbās II, died in 1666, there was some debate as to whether he or his 7-years-younger brother, Ḥamza Mirzā, would succeed, but Sām Mirzā was enthroned under the name Ṣafi II at age 19 in Isfahan. However, because his early reign was problematic (money troubles, illness, earthquake), he was re-enthroned in 1668, as Sulaymān I.
