Marschalk, Nikolaus, approximately 1470-1525

Nikolaus Marschalk was a German philologist, legal scholar, historian and humanist. After attending the universities in Louvain and Heidelberg, he earned a master of arts degree at the University of Erfurt in 1496 and a bachelor's in law. He became a city clerk, and in 1501 he set up his own printing press, publishing the Orthographia, the first Greek textbook written in Germany. He received a doctorate in law from the University of Wittenberg in 1504, set up the first printing press there, and taught Greek language and literature, forming rivalries with his scholastic colleagues. Moving to the Mecklenburg court, he served as ducal councilor in Schwerin and traveled on diplomatic missions, then in 1510 began lecturing at the University of Rostock. He pioneered archaeological excavation and research and wrote a number of historical works, though he also falsified historical accounts.
