Clarke, Charles Mansfield, 1839-1932
British army officer and colonial administrator. Clarke served as Commandant-General in South Africa between 1880 and 1882. After holding administrative posts, he was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Madras Army in 1893. He returned to South Africa to serve as a commander in the Second Boer War (1899) and then to hold the post of Quartermaster-General to the Forces (1899-1903). Clarke was Governor and Commander-in-Chief of Malta from 1903 until his retirement in 1907. In 1899, he succeeded to the title of 3rd Baronet Clarke of Dunham Lodge. He married Gemma Cecilia Adams (died 1922) in 1867, and then Constance Marion Warner in 1929. He died on April 22, 1932.
