- Nicolas Perron, French chemist and physician; spent middle decades of 19th century in Cairo working with Antoine Barthélemy Clot at the European-style medical school there (established by Mehmet Ali Pasha, viceroy of Egypt); he moved to Algeria and led the newly established Imperial Arab-French college in 1858; also an Arabist, translator, editor of books on Islamic law, literature, and medicine
