Celtis, Konrad, 1459-1508
Born Konrad Bickel (or Pyckell), Conrad Celtes was a humanist scholar and poet. As a poet, he gave lectures throughout central Europe, all the while engaging a network of fellow humanists and expanding his education into the sciences. He founded literary societies in Kraków, Prague, and Heidelberg, and was a proponent of German advancement in education and literature, so to rival Italian achievements. In his later years, he was a professor, teaching at Heidelberg University and in Vienna as head of the new Collegium Poetarum et Mathematicorum, where he contributed to advancements in teaching and the furthering of classical Latin and Greek studies.
