Niccolò, de' Tudeschi, Archbishop, 1386-1445

Italian Benedictine prelate, canonist, theologian, and professor. He studied canon law at the Università di Bologna, and taught at the universities in Parma, Siena, and Bologna. In 1425, he was made abbot of the monastery of Maniace (near Messina). In 1433, he went to Rome, where he held Apostolic posts for a year and, upon obtaining the patronage of Alfonso V of Aragon, was made Archbishop of Palermo. He is best known for his canonical works.
