Marotta, Erasmo, 1576-1641

Italian priest, singer, musician, and composer from Sicily, who studied and was ordained in Rome, where he quickly achieved success as a performer and composed madrigals. He resettled in Sicily in 1613, entering the Jesuit order in Palermo, while continuing his musical pursuits despite the disapproval of some of his superiors. In 1620, he was made a rector of a local college of Jesuits in Mineo (near Catania), returning to Palermo three years later with more attention to his ecclesiastical and pedagogical duties to the order. During this time, he aided in the foundation of a Carmelite convent in Palermo and a boarding school in his native Randazzo. In his final years, he focused once again on music, composing motets for voices and active in overseeing music at the Jesuit college. He died in Palermo on October 6, 1641.
