Priscianese, Francesco, active 1540-1547
Italian humanist, philologist and printer. He was born near Arezzo, where he received an education and briefly taught Latin. After moving to Florence in the mid-1520s, he was employed as a tutor to the prominent Dini, Strozzi, and Pazzi families as well as a civic official on behalf of the Florentine Republic. Upon the fall of Florence to the Medici, Francesco relocated to Rome in 1535 and was active in literary and poetic circles. As a noted Latinist, he worked as a printer in Rome from 1542 to 1544, supervising the production of Latin texts. He then focused on vernacular and classical translations, based in Rome and then in Venice in roughly 1547. Among his notable works are two Latin grammars. He may have died around 1575.
