Seyxas y Lovera, Francisco de, 1646-1705

Spanish mariner and explorer, who was educated in the humanities in Salamanca and, opting for a career at sea, sailed to various parts of the world on French, Dutch, Spanish, and Portuguese ships. In the early-1680s, he was a privateer for Spain during its war with France. From 1685 to 1690, he engaged in intellectual pursuits, writing works on maritime travel and geography. Throughout the 1690s, he embarked on travels and ventures in North, Central, and South America. Despite being employed in naval and colonial service (mayor then governor of Tacuba) by the Spanish government, he gave his allegiance to the French in the late-1690s, earning a lucrative salary from king Louis XIV to produce memoirs and narratives on the New World. He died in Paris in 1705.
