Stieler, Kaspar von, 1632-1707
Kaspar was a poet, playwright, writer, scholar, and linguist who was known for writing a dictionary of contemporary German vocabulary. From 1653 to 1654, he studied at the University of Königsberg and probably wrote many of his songs collected later as Geharnschte Venus there. Afterwards he was a soldier, which also inspired his later war writings. He briefly studied law in Jena 1661-1662, then served as a secretary at various Central German royal courts, while also working on his literary, linguistic, and legal writings. He joined the Fruchtbringende Gesellschaft, a notable language academy. In 1689 Stieler resigned from the secretarial service and returned to Erfurt, where he lived as a private scholar; in 1705 he was raised to the hereditary nobility.
