Cousin of the caliphs al-Saffāḥ (r. 132-6/749-54) and al-Manṣūr (r. 136-58/754-75); governor of Medina and Egypt under caliph Hārūn al-Rashīd, then governor in northern Syria; imprisoned in Baghdad in 187/803, then released in 193/809; died in 196/811 in al-Raqqah
