Pires, Tomé, approximately 1468-approximately 1540
Portuguese pharmacologist and diplomat, who was royal apothecary to Afonso, prince of Portugal until his death in 1491. He later travelled through southeast Asia, documenting the Malay-Indonesia region, and residing in Malacca from 1512 to 1515, during which time he wrote his famous Suma Oriental que trata do Mar Roxo até aos Chins. In 1516, he was the first European ambassador to the Chinese imperial court, yet the mission was a failure, and he was never received by the Zhengde Emperor.
