Ruffo, Giordano, -1256
Italian soldier, royal servant, and veterinarian, whose family was in the service of emperor Frederick II. Upon the death of Frederick, his family was obliged to follow one of the Hohenstaufen claimants. Choosing Conrad over Manfredi, the former's death in 1254 led to his family's arrest by the latter, whereby he was imprisoned, tortured, blinded, and left to die in prison. He is best-known for a seminal work on veterinarian medicine pertaining to horses, entitled De medicina equorum.
