Cassiodorus, Senator, approximately 487-approximately 580
Cassiodorus was a Roman statesman, scholar, and administrator in the service of the Ostrogoth King Theodoric the Great (454-526). He began his career as a legal official, despite a limited education in law, and continued in this administrative capacity under the reigns of Theodoric and his successor Athalaric (516-534). Possessing literary skills, he was highly regarded for crafting government documents. He also collaborated with Pope Agapetus I (489/90-536) in compiling a library of Greek and Latin texts. He lived in Constantinople for two decades, studying Eastern and Western, Roman and Gothic, culture. His final years were spent at the monastery of Vivarium, which he founded, and on religious writings.
