Wālī, Muḥammad ibn Sulaymān, active 1688
A Torobbe Fulani whose father had emigrated from Kebbi to Bornu and thence to Baghirmi where he settled in Abgara (or Abougern), where he is reportedly buried. He was skilled in the science of letters and magic squares, celebrated in ḥadīth and tafsīr and is said to have introduced the study of metrics and rhyme to Bornu. He performed the ḥajj twice and while in Egypt made the acquaintance of Muḥammad ibn ʻAlāʼ al-Dīn al-Bābilī (d. 1077/1666). Al-Wālī’s primary interests appear to have been in the field of theology [kalām] with particular emphasis on the doctrine of tawḥīd. He also seems to have involved himself with the study, and more pertinently the teaching, of the sciences of language, especially grammar. Despite his known opposition to the study of astrology, he was a teacher of Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad al-Kashnāwī, who gained fame in this field.
