Illicino, Pietro, approximately 1504-1582

Italian humanist, jurist, and teacher who studied in Padua. He spent time at the Polish court from 1547 and held a chair at the university in Kraków, where he taught law and philosophy, before taking a teaching position at the university in Vienna in 1551. His early scholarship focused heavily on humanism: he wrote poetry, authored commentaries on Cicero and Plato, and wrote treatises on philosophy and pedagogical reform. Later in life, he turned more heavily to a study of canon law and advocated for Catholicism during his years as a canon supporting dioceses in Esztergom, Pécs, and Olomouc.
