Mameranus, Nikolaus, 1500-approximately 1567

Nicolaus Mameranus was the court poet and military historian of the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. He studied from 1525 at the Stiftschule in Emmerich, from 1531 at the universities of Cologne and then Orléans, and from 1535 at Bordeaux. Starting as a soldier, Nicolaus traveled with Charles' armies throughout Europe and North Africa. Some of his early works chronicle the challenging times caused by religious wars and document the coronation of Charles V. Nicolaus's brother Heinrich printed the books in Cologne. When Charles II, Duke of Orléans, pillaged Nicolaus's hometown, Charles V paid for its restoration. Nicolaus had connections to the influential merchant Fugger family, who gave loans to the Spanish court, and Nicolaus prepared inventories for the Spanish court (1550), and for the Reichstag in Augsburg (1566). Nicolaus wrote about history, theology, pedagogy, and numismatics, as well as satirical texts and poetry. He was appointed poet laureate and Count palatine in 1555 by Charles V, as one of his very last official acts. With Charles V's son, Philip II, Nicolaus was in England in 1557 at the court of Mary I.
