Ribadeneyra, Pedro de, 1526-1611

Spanish Jesuit priest, theologian, rhetorician, and hagiographer, who was a companion of Ignatius of Loyola (1491-1556). He studied philosophy and theology in Paris, Louvain, and Padua, then taught rhetoric in Palermo. On behalf of the order, he travelled to Belgium and England, resulting in his Historia Ecclesiastica del scisma del Reyno de Inglaterra. In succession, he was provincial of the order in Tuscany (1560), Sicily (1563), and later in Flanders. He is best known for his biography of Loyola, published in 1572, and for his ascetic work Tratado de la tribulación (1589).
