Vitali, Giovanni Battista, 1632-1692

Italian composer, cellist, and singer from Bologna, who studied under Maurizio Cazzati (1616-1678) at Cappella musicale di S. Petronio, where he performed and taught. In 1674, he entered service at the Este court of Modena, later holding the post of maestro from 1684 until his death. He is credited with the composition and publishing of numerous sacred and secular instrumental pieces, and is particularly known for his concertos and sonatas. He died in Modena on October 12, 1692.
