Bury, Richard de, 1287-1345

English priest, bishop, scholar, government official, and bibliophile. He was tutor to the future King Edward III (1312-1377), who upon accession rewarded de Bury with royal household and government offices. The patronage of the king and Pope John XXII, to which de Bury served briefly as chaplain, resulted in his elevation in the Church, including to the see of Durham. He was also sent on several diplomatic missions on the Continent. He is perhaps best known for his patronage of learning and book collection, for which he wrote Philobiblon.
