Berthold, von Holle, active 1251-1270

Berthold von Holle was a Middle High German epic poet from the area around Hildesheim. He mentions Duke Johann I von Braunschweig-Lüneburg (approximately 1242-1277), who may have been a patron. His writings are in a blend of Low and High German. Three of his verse romances are known: Demantin narrates a long succession of combats and tournaments; Crâne tells the story of a king's son who runs away, marries the emperor's daughter, and reveals he is the rightful king of Hungary; and fragments of Darifant. Berthold's poems make no mention of Arthur and possess an element of realism.
