Bebel, Heinrich, 1472-1518

He was born in Ingstetten (now part of Schelklingen), attended the Jagiellonian University from 1492-1495, and attended the University of Basel in 1494-1495. From 1497, he was chair of oratorios and professor of poetry and rhetoric at the University of Tübingen. In 1501, Maximilian I crowned him poet laureate, for which Heinrich composed a poem in the emperor's honor. Heinrich published extensively and is most known for his Facetiae (1506), a collection of low-brow humor and anecdotes, directed mainly against the clergy, and which inspired later poets such as Jörg Wickram and Hans Wilhelm Kirchhof. His other prominent works include the dictionary of provers Proverbia Germanica and the satire Triumphus Veneris.
