Muir, George William, 1813-1866
British bookseller, publisher, and merchant, who came to Malta in 1841 and operated a bookstore, circulating library, and stationary shop first on 43 Strade Mezzodi and then on 247 Strada Reale, Valletta, Malta. Born in Carron, Scotland, he was baptized in Portsmouth on April 9, 1813, son of George Muir (d. 1828), royal sailor, and Hannah Malone. George, like his father, served in the British navy as a captain's steward on the HMS Undaunted, Caledonia, Thunderer, and Princess Charlotte. In 1837, he married Frances Ann Way (d. 1857), and had a son, George William Muir. He was a collaborator with the Brocktorff family, namely Luigi Brocktorff and Charles Frederick de Brocktorff. He departed Malta in 1865 and died at the Chiswick Lunatic Asylum in 1866.
