Cordus, Valerius, 1515-1544
Valerius Cordus was a German physician, botanist, and pharmacologist. Educated at the University of Marburg, under the tutelage of his father Euricius (1484-1535), Cordus studied medicine, and then continued his studies at the University of Leipzig while working at an apothecary shop owned by his uncle. He taught and furthered his studies at Wittenberg, where his popular lectures were published posthumously as Annotations on Dioscorides, using the notes from his students. During this time, he also discovered a revolutionay technique for synthesizing ether. In 1542, he presented his pharmacopoeia, entitled Dispensatorium, to the Nuremberg city council, who compensated him for it. This text was the first manual of its kind north of the Alps. The following year, 1543, he relocated to Italy to do field research in botany. He died prematurely within a year.
