Agazzari, Agostino, 1578-1640

Italian organist, choirmaster, and composer of vocal liturgical music who was from Siena. He taught music theory in Rome at the Collegio Romano until 1607, and thereafter was organist and then choirmaster at the cathedral in Siena. He is known for his numerous compositions of madrigals and motets, his vocal arrangments for Psalms and masses, his Completorium for four voices, and his Litanie, which contains arrangments for four, five, six, and eight voices. In particular, he produced the early and influential work on basso continuo, Del sonare sopra il basso (1607).He also composed a pastoral drama entitled Eumelio (1606). He died in Siena on April 10, 1640.
