- Latin: Gaspar Schottus; 5 February 1608 – 22 May 1666; Germany physicist, mathematician; joined Society of Jesus in 1627; studied philosophy at University of Würzburg; fled the city to Tournai, Belgium with Swedish invasion in 1631; then to Caltagirone, Italy in 1633 and Palermo to study theology; ordained priest in 1637; held teaching and pastoral positions in various Jesuit colleges in Sicily; transferred to the Collegio Romano in Rome to assist Athanasius Kircher; returned to Germany in 1655, first to Mainz and then to Würzburg
