- Franciscus Maurolycus Messanensis; born in Messina Sept. 16, 1494, and died near Messina on July 21, 1575; spent years in the service of Giovanni Ventimiglio, Marchese di Gerace, accompanying him to Palermo, Naples, and Rome; tutored son of the Viceroy Juan de Vega in Palermo before 1550; became abbot of S. Maria del Parto, near Castelbuono in Sicily, in 1550; taught mathematics at the University of Messina; original writings in the fields of mathematics, physics, astronomy, grammar, history, optics, ichthyology, and hagiography; translated and annotated mathematical works
