Pol, Nicolaus, approximately 1467-1532
From 1487 until his death in 1532 at the age of about 65, Nicolaus Pol was the pharmacist for Sigmund, Archduke of Austria, at Innsbruck and the physician of Sigmund's successors, the emperors Maximilian I (beginning in 1495) and Charles V (in 1519). Nicolaus received a medical degree around 1494 and taught medicine to students, although there was no university at Innsbruck at the time. He collected an enormous library, estimated to hold 1350 volumes on subjects ranging from medicine and natural sciences to alchemy, astrology and divination. After his death, his library passed to Innichen Abbey in South Tyrol. Nicolaus is most known for his treatise on the guaiac treatment of syphilis--the most problematic disease of his time--printed posthumously in 1535 but completed much earlier in 1517.
