Zabarella, Francesco, 1360-1417

Italian prelate, jurist, academic, who was bishop of Florence and a cardinal . He studied canon law at the universities in Bologna and Florence, and taught in the Università di Padova from 1391 to 1410, during which time he wrote commentaries on the Decretals of Gregory IX and on the Clementines. In Padua, he also held judicial posts, covering both civil and canonical law, and provided counsel to public and private clients. In 1410, he was appointed to the see of Florence, from which he resigned soon after due to his elevation to cardinal in 1411. He participated in the council of Constance, where he died in 1417.
